Chapter 33-EpilogueChapter Summaries & Analyses

Chapter 33 Summary: “Lizard’s Tail”

Olive and Theo visit Butter Bakery, where Poppy shares that due to her sister’s illness, she must close the bakery and return to London. Auntie Winnie offers to manage the bakery in her absence. Meanwhile, the Misfits analyze their failed gala mission in the Laundry Room. Phil introduces new inventions and requests faculty lounge access in order to prevent any further communication failures. Modest and Monica agree. The team follows a lead to San Francisco, searching for the Winky brooch. Most jewelry stores are closed, and the team notes that lost cat flyers and KittyKon advertisements cover every surface. They briefly suspect that Sterling Vanderwisp is the Bling King, but they doubt that he has the intelligence to orchestrate the heists. Modest instructs them to gather intel only and forbids them from confiscating any jewelry.

Chapter 34 Summary: “Benny’s Pawn Shop”

After three hours of searching, Olive and James find the Winky brooch at Benny’s Pawn Shop. Jinx, a young woman with a butterscotch-colored Himalayan cat, tells them to call if they need her. They step outside to celebrate, but when they return, the brooch is gone, and someone has ransacked the jewelry case. James searches behind the store and sees Jinx driving away. Hearing noises coming from a locker, Olive investigates the office. They discover Benny, bound and gagged. He reveals that he bought the brooch for $180 before the seller returned, stole it back, and tied him up. James updates the other members of the team, who are furious that Jinx has escaped.

Chapter 35 Summary: “Jinx”

Phil accesses security footage, showing Jinx leaving with the cat. The footage also shows that her car is full of crated cats. Theo recognizes Jinx from the Community Outreach Center, where he delivers pastries. The team realizes that Poppy may have hidden jewels in the pastries, which would explain how the jewels were smuggled off of Foggy Island. Police Chief Ruby acknowledges Jinx’s involvement but questions why she sold the brooch for so little. The team concludes that the Royal Rumpus is in San Francisco and cannot yet be smuggled from the city due to high security.

Chapter 36 Summary: “Clues”

Olive worries about RASCH’s fate as Dame Gloria offers a one-million-dollar reward for the Royal Rumpus and $250,000 for the Winky brooch. At Butter Bakery, Olive and Iggy find the handyman, Brood, who has a crush on Winnie. Iggy explains that Winnie took some time off. Searching the bakery, they find a Fancy Cat magazine, which further links the case to cats. The team heads back to San Francisco and sees even more missing cat flyers. Calling the owners, they learn that all of the missing cats are expensive show cats that were stolen within the last week.

Theo recalls Jinx’s habit of ignoring all pastry bags except those with lemon cake. James deduces that lemon cake signifies the presence of jewels. Pawnshop owners confirm that a woman matching Jinx’s description repeatedly sold and stole back the Winky brooch. As the team continues investigating, Iggy warns that they are being followed.

Chapter 37 Summary: “The Decoy”

The team splits up, and the pursuer follows James. The man is one of the decoy thieves from the gala; he says that he was instructed to avoid water but forgot, and this mistake costed him his payment. As the Misfits regroup, James recalls a similar heist that was conducted 50 years ago by a thief known as “the Cat.” Iggy suggests that the Bling King Ring uses cats to smuggle jewels. Olive points to the faux-gem cat collars featured in the magazine, theorizing that the stolen cats carry the gems. Since the authorities are checking people and cargo but not pets, this tactic would allow the thieves to bypass security. Phil designs an app to identify the missing cats and introduces her GemDetect device, which is programmed to detect large gems. The team selects Olive to use it.

Chapter 38 Summary: “KittyKon”

Police Chief Ruby reluctantly supports the plan and provides backup. The Misfits disguise themselves and arrive at KittyKon, where they are overwhelmed by cats wearing jeweled collars. Olive discovers that she is allergic to cats and sneezes constantly. A woman directs her to an allergy medication stall. The medicine makes her drowsy, but as she yawns, the GemDetect glows. She alerts James, who locates a stolen cat. Phil monitors security cameras and spots Jinx at the Creative Cat Collars booth, fitting stolen cats with special collars that require unique removal tools. Theo distracts the workers by pretending to be a photographer, and this ruse allows James to slip a tracker onto a cat.

Iggy calls a “code pimple,” and James and Olive rush to help. They encounter Dame Gloria’s bodyguards, whom they suspect are part of the Bling King Ring. The bodyguards try to grab Iggy, but she fights back. James creates a diversion by rubbing a cat on Olive’s face, triggering sneezes that allow Iggy to escape. Meanwhile, James and Olive return to the booth and see the Himalayan cat from the pawn shop; the cat is now fitted with a new, jeweled collar. The GemDetect glows, and Phil confirms that the gem on the Himalayan’s collar is the Aphrodite diamond from the Royal Rumpus. Jinx grabs the cat, but James quickly places a tracker on its paw.

Chapter 39 Summary: “Airport”

The Misfits follow the tracking device’s signal and discover that multiple cat carriers, including the “Aphrodite Cat,” are being transported to the airport. KittyKon has its own express security checkpoint, so no one is checking the cat carriers. The team sneaks into the Captain’s Club, watching as Jinx and six of Dame Gloria’s bodyguards work with the stolen cats. They realize that this is the Bling King Ring. Jinx retrieves the Winky brooch from a cat.

The Misfits spray the Bling King Ring with StinkSpray, sending the cats into a frenzy. Olive lets in a fake “dog catcher” who releases several dogs, creating chaos. Jinx orders the bodyguards to round up the cats instead of chasing the Misfits. A receptionist enters to check on the source of the commotion, unknowingly setting all the cats and dogs loose in the airport.

Phil informs the team that police and Humane Society volunteers are coming. Olive chases Jinx, who loses the Aphrodite Cat. The cat escapes into an empty passenger terminal, where Sterling Vanderwisp tries to pet it. Olive alerts the team of Sterling’s presence and hears Auntie Winnie’s voice. Brood also appears, giving Winnie flowers as she prepares to board a flight. Jinx grabs the cat, but Brood takes it from her and runs. Jinx tackles Brood, and the cat gets loose again. Olive, confused, secures Sterling, Jinx, and Brood using a gadget.

Chapter 40 Summary: “The Bling King?”

Iggy, Theo, and James arrive, explaining that they have secured the rest of the Bling King Ring. Olive takes the Winky brooch from Jinx, but the three captives yell at her. James spots Auntie Winnie running across the airport, carrying the Aphrodite Cat. Phil loses sight of her as she enters an abandoned hangar. The Misfits split up to find her.

Olive sneezes, sensing a cat nearby. She hears a squeaky wheel and spots Winnie wearing a baggage handler vest and carrying the cat. Olive orders her to stop, but Winnie threatens to harm the cat if Olive does not drop her weapon. Winnie reveals that there was never a Bling King—she has always been “The Cat.” She throws a handful of Bling King cards at Olive, revealing that the “crown” symbol is a cat’s paw.

A helicopter approaches. Winnie jumps aboard, but Olive grabs the skid bar. Hanging from her legs, she secures herself to Bee, the drone. Winnie dangles the Aphrodite Cat over the edge, yelling at Olive, who cannot hear her. Olive swings up, grabs the cat, and releases the bar. The drone lowers her safely to the ground, where the Misfits catch her.

Chapter 41 Summary: “Home”

At the airport security office, Police Chief Ruby informs the team that all the catnappers and stolen jewels are secured. Sterling Vanderwisp appears to be innocent and may testify against Winnie, but Winnie escapes. Poppy is cleared of all charges, having been tricked by Winnie. The Misfits return to Foggy Island, where Modest and Monica embrace them. Olive finally feels that she belongs.

Chapter 42 Summary: “Clue”

The team bonds over board games and reflects on the case. The police return all the cats to their owners, except for the Aphrodite Cat, which remains unclaimed. Jinx, who is revealed to be The Cat’s granddaughter, admits to selling the Winky brooch to supplement her small allowance.

Brood joins the team and reveals that he works for NOCK and has been hunting the Cat for years. He reports to “the Mouse,” the Cat’s arch-nemesis. Ruby announces that Dame Gloria is thrilled to have the Royal Rumpus jewels returned, even though a master jeweler must reconstruct the necklace. Dame Gloria reinstates RASCH’s funding. Ruby also informs the Misfits that they have earned $1,250,000.

Chapter 43 Summary: “The Mouse”

Before leaving, Brood asks Olive to walk with him. He gives her a ceramic mouse figurine with a chipped ear: a gift from the Mouse. While he cannot confirm if the Mouse is Mimi or if Mimi is alive, he does not deny it either. He assures Olive that the Mouse will contact her soon.

Olive then sees her parents, who confess that they knew Mimi was alive and apologize for keeping this fact a secret. Dr. Corbin Zang also admits to reading Olive’s diary and apologizes for making her feel alone. They cancel their next business trip to bring Olive home, but Olive tells them that she would rather stay at RASCH. Sunny joins them, and Olive’s parents reveal that they are part of NOCK. Sunny reassures Olive that the family secret is safe with her. Olive realizes that Sunny O’Moa is Anonymous.

Epilogue Summary

Over dinner, the team sets aside most of their money as an emergency fund for RASCH.

That night, Olive visits the Donut Trespass! area and finds Queenie, formerly the Aphrodite Cat, whom Sunny has adopted. She takes the cat to the moat, where she finds Zeke. He tells her that he is in danger and needs her help.

Chapter 33-Epilogue Analysis

In the final chapters of The Royal Conundrum, The Deceptive Nature of Appearances, The Search for Identity and Belonging, and The Importance of Teamwork and Friendship all play a crucial role in resolving the novel’s central mystery. As the Misfits navigate espionage, stolen jewels, and shifting allegiances, they confront the reality that appearances are often misleading. Their journey also explores the need for a sense of belonging, particularly for Olive, who struggles with her place in her family and RASCH. Collaboration is essential to their success, and as the Misfits work together to bring the Bling King Ring to justice, their efforts highlight the power of trust and collective endeavors.

One of the most prominent themes in these chapters is The Deceptive Nature of Appearances. Several characters present false identities or motivations, making it difficult for the team to determine who can be trusted. Auntie Winnie, who is initially portrayed as a kind and supportive figure, is revealed to be the true mastermind behind the Bling King Ring. Moreover, she points out the sexism and ageism in the assumption that the Bling King must be a man. In reality, she is not only the Bling King but also the Cat, a famous thief believed to have retired 50 years ago. This revelation redefines the entire case, demonstrating that preconceived notions can often obscure the truth.

The novel reinforces this theme through the strategic use of symbols. For example, although the Bling King’s crown symbol initially appears to represent royal power, Olive realizes that the so-called “crown” is actually a cat’s paw. This small but crucial detail misleads the characters until Olive’s insight reshapes their understanding of the criminal organization. However, the motif of disguise extends beyond symbols to encompass key characters as well. Brood, who poses as RASCH’s maintenance man and appears weak, is in reality an undercover NOCK operative. When his limp vanishes as he sprints through the airport, the team’s misperceptions of him are shattered. Likewise, even Mimi falls into the category of deceptive characters, as Olive also discovers when she realizes that her grandmother, who is presumed dead, is actually alive and is deeply involved in the pursuit of the Cat. Yee extends the theme of deception to an extreme degree when Olive’s seemingly dull and distant parents turn out to be NOCK operatives, and Sunny, the emotional dean of RASCH, is revealed to be Anonymous, the head of NOCK. Each fresh revelation forces Olive to reconsider her assumptions, and as the social landscape around her shifts dramatically, she is forced to internalize the crucial life lesson that people are not always what they seem to be.

In addition to finding this truth, Olive also realizes that The Search for Identity and Belonging that has consumed her is now coming to an end, for she has finally found a niche in the quirky world of RASCH. Throughout the novel, she has struggled with feelings of isolation within her own family and in her first days at the elite school. Notably, her connections to her parents are damaged even further when she discovers that they have concealed Mimi’s survival and their own involvement with NOCK. Their secrecy makes Olive question her place in the family, but their eventual apology and decision to cancel their business trip signal an attempt to rebuild trust. However, Olive’s decision to remain at RASCH demonstrates that she has found a stronger sense of belonging with her new team members, who have become her found family.

Olive’s growth is evident in her increasing confidence and competence. At the beginning of the novel, she often feels overlooked, but as her new  team recognizes her talents, her self-perception shifts. When the Misfits need someone “super stealthy […] nimble and even-tempered” (230) to use the GemDetect, everyone unanimously chooses Olive. By the end of the story, she proves her intelligence and resourcefulness, particularly in the climactic scene, when she rescues the Aphrodite cat from Winnie’s helicopter. This daring act solidifies her transformation from an uncertain outsider to a decisive leader. By taking control of the situation and physically securing the cat, she metaphorically asserts her agency and trust in her team, demonstrating that she belongs in this world of espionage.

The novel’s thematic focus on The Importance of Teamwork and Friendship is reflected in the fact that these elements are essential to the Misfits’ success. While individual skills contribute to solving the mystery, the team members’ collective efforts allow them to outmaneuver the Bling King Ring. Each member plays a critical role in the final showdown, from Theo’s charm in infiltrating the Captain’s Club to Olive’s quick thinking in apprehending Jinx and Brood. Their ability to trust one another and pool their strengths sets them apart from the disorganized criminals who turn on one another when things go wrong. Likewise, the Misfits’ decision to allocate their reward money to RASCH and various charities underscores their belief in the power of collective support. Rather than keeping the money for themselves, they recognize the value of using their success to help others. Their investments in the Bay Area Community Outreach Center and the Humane Society highlight their commitment to teamwork beyond their own circle. Additionally, their choice to set aside funds for RASCH’s future emergencies shows their understanding that their mission is ongoing.

The setting further reinforces these themes. The airport, a place of constant movement and transition, is the backdrop for the climax. It is a space where identities shift—people adopt disguises, and chaos creates opportunities for deception. The rapid pace of the action in these final chapters mirrors the unpredictability of espionage, forcing the characters to adapt quickly. By contrast, the return to Foggy Island represents stability and belonging. Here, Olive finds a degree of warmth and acceptance that counterbalances the uncertainty and secrecy that she faced earlier in the novel. Although the novel’s conclusion leaves some questions unanswered, it also solidifies the characters’ personal growth. Olive, once uncertain of her place, now emerges as a confident leader, and as the Misfits become a true team, their journey demonstrates that trust and collaboration can overcome even the most elaborate deception.
