Symbols & Motifs

Phoenixes

The Ashlords’ phoenix horses are not only the central magical mechanic that drives the action of Ashlords, but they are also deeply symbolic of Ashlord culture and to the novel’s protagonists, whose phoenixes and their rebirths symbolize different things for each of them. Imelda, like most Dividian, grew up poor and had very little access to phoenixes growing up. Instead, she used Ashlord holy days to ride rented phoenixes at Martial’s ranch. For Imelda, the phoenixes represent social mobility. Her skills with riding and alchemy are her chance to move up in a world that otherwise casts her as a second-class citizen. Imelda chooses esoteric rebirths with flashy effects, earning her the nickname of “the Alchemist.” These rebirths represent her creativity and skill as an alchemist.

While Adrian does not face the same hardships as Imelda, he, as a Longhand, is a member of a subjugated social class. Unlike Imelda, he did not grow up poor, and, like many in the Reach, he had plenty of experience riding. For Adrian, the phoenixes are merely a tool. Throughout the novel, he is never shown to have developed a connection with his horse. He and the other Longhands use the phoenixes as a means to an end, just as Adrian’s participation in the Races is an excuse to spark a revolution. Adrian’s rebirths tend to emphasize violence: The violent, carnivorous Ravenous rebirth and the hunting rebirth demonstrate Adrian’s offensive capabilities in a competition that is rigged against him.

Pippa is the most privileged of the trio. The daughter of Prama and Marcos, former champions of the Races, Pippa has racing in her blood. She has spent her whole life with her phoenix, developing a bond that endures between rebirths. For Pippa, the phoenixes represent her birthright. While Imelda excels in alchemy and Adrian is a gifted fighter, Pippa is the most well-rounded of the three, gifted in alchemy, fighting, and riding. She chooses rebirths that mirror her flashy public personality.

Storms, Thunder, and Lightning

Storms, particularly thunder and lightning, are a motif used by multiple characters throughout Ashlords to describe the Races, rivalry, and the growing Longhand rebellion. The prevalence of this motif indicates the importance of storms to the culture of the Ashlord Empire. Storms rage across the vast deserts of the continent and the open expanses of the Reach, providing characters with a vivid metaphor to draw upon in their public interviews. For example, Pippa claims that Adrian will be the thunder to her lightning in her initial interview in the novel: Thunder always follows lightning, she says, so no matter how much of a threat Adrian poses, he will finish after her. On the other hand, Adrian contends that during a storm, the thunder and lightning happen almost simultaneously, making it impossible to tell which came first. Adrian frequently refers to the Longhand rebellion as a storm gathering on the horizon, reflecting the violence and chaos that he knows will come with war.

Social Media

Social media is a motif that emphasizes the public spectacle of the Races, their importance to Ashlord society, and the constant scrutiny faced by prominent racers. The Ashlord Empire uses social media in much the same way as we do in real life. However, one platform, the Chats, takes the place of most real-world social media. People share monetized videos, like YouTube, and share gossip and speculation about public figures, like X or Bluesky. The Beholder, a site where celebrities can sell racy photographs of themselves to individual fans, even mirrors certain real-world adult websites.

Pippa leverages her social media presence to promote her personal brand, making money from corporate sponsorships. Her relationship with Bravos is the subject of public speculation, with paparazzi-like hackers leaking their private messages. Pippa uses this to drive up interest in her racing career, building up a fake story about her “breakup” with Bravos. Pippa’s social media clout also enables Imelda’s success and entry into the Races. By using her endorsement of Imelda as a distraction from her scandalous Beholder photoshoot, Pippa not only deflects public scrutiny but also boosts the views of Imelda’s “Trust Fall” video, earning her and Farian more money than they have ever seen and ensuring that she is selected as the Qualifier candidate. In addition, Imelda’s popularity as the Alchemist on the Chats gives her the cover she needs to pull a heist of valuable alchemical components from under the officials’ noses without drawing any scrutiny.
