The two skip the ball and spend the evening together, during which they talk, wander the property, and get into mischief (such as sliding down the banner). Because of this meeting, Char later wishes to visit Ella before his departure to Ayortha; however, when Hattie realizes that Char is interested in Ella, she orders Ella to stay in her room when he visits. (Chapters 21-22)

Ella is ecstatic because she loves him as well; however, she is concerned because she doesn’t know how their marriage would affect her or the difficult relationship she has with her family. She determines that in order to protect herself and Char, she must convince Char that she did not love him, and that she had eloped with someone else. (Chapter 25)
